1. You must have New York State-issued automobile liability insurance coverage to register a vehicle in New York State. If you do not maintain coverage, DMV can suspend your vehicle registration and your driver license.
a. $10,000 for property damage for a single accident
b. $25,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 for death for a person involved in an accident
c. $50,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 for death for two or more people in an accident
2. Your motorcycle must have insurance coverage any time it is operated on a public road or highway.
3. If your vehicle does not carry required insurance coverage, DMV will order to suspend your driver’s license:
a. Within 90 days
(1) Within 90 days, you may pay civil penalty in lieu of the suspension. You pay penalty and need not to turn in your driving license and registration. Your Suspension Order from the DMV shows how much you must pay. The amount depends on how long you did not have insurance coverage. The fine may be up to $900, calculated as follows:
1- 30 days: $8 per day, up to $240
31- 60 days: $10 per day, up to $300
61-90 days: $ 12 per day, up to $360
(2) If you do not pay this penalty, DMV will Suspend your driver’s license and registration for the same amount of time you had been uninsured.
b. Excess 90 days
Your driver’s license and registration will be revoked if your vehicle has been uninsured for more than 90 days. You have to pay $750 to reinstate the license.
4. If you are convicted of operating an uninsured motor vehicle or permitting another person to operate a motor vehicle, your driver’s license will be revoked for at least one year and you will be assess a civil penalty of $750 .
