1. Take care of the points seriously because 6 points will have your driver’s license assessed and 11 points will have your driver’s license suspended.
a. Your driver’s license will be suspended if you receive 11 points within an 18-month period.
b. Your driver’s license will be assessed if you receive 6 points. You are required to pay for the assessment in order to keep your driver’s license:
- $300 for the first 6 points and $75 for each one point more (Driver
Responsibility Assessment).
2. You must be convicted of the traffic violation before points are added to your driving record. Your point total is calculated based on the date of the violation, not the date of the conviction. You should counsel your attorney about how to avoid your driver’s license suspended.
3. There is no statute of limitations on a traffic ticket. Do not just leave it. Even though you are found guilty after the 18-month period and the points will not count against you as total, the guilty of speeding violation will remain on your abstract (driving record) for three or more years and can result in an increase in your insurance premium. You are better to counsel your attorney when a speeding ticket it is involved.
4. Most traffic convictions and vehicle accidents remain on your record until the end of the year of the conviction or accident, plus an additional three years. More serious convictions, like a DWI, remain on your record for 15 years.
